New aviation jobs created through Tallahassee airport upgrade

Tallahassee Regional Airport in Florida has recently received Federal Government funding in order to upgrade its runways, which could bring new aviation jobs to the area.

The airport was awarded just under $13 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to carry out the improvement work.

The City of Tallahassee has confirmed that it is delighted by the news, saying that the upgrades will ‘provide a boost to the local economy, with up to 160 workers being hired for the project.’

The Airport – which is located on a site seven miles outside the city’s central business district – currently comprises 2,743 acres of area, and the grant will see the rehabilitation of Runway 09/27 alongside the extension of the north/south Runway 18-36 to 7,000 feet from 6,000. < Read more…

‘Lack of skilled candidates’ restricting micro-business growth

The research found that despite more than half (55%) of micro-businesses (defined as those with fewer than 10 employees) looking to increase their staff numbers, exactly half said that they found it difficult to recruit the right people.

Almost half (47%) of respondents to the survey said they would not be confident that school leavers with A-levels or equivalent qualifications would have the necessary skills for their business, and less than a quarter (22%) said that they would be confident this would be the case.

Meanwhile, only one-third (36%) of respondents said they were very or fairly confident that university leavers would have the right skills for the job.

Workers forced into part-time roles hits record high

The figures, released by the Office of National Statistics today, found that 1.26 million people were working part time because they had struggled to find full-time employment in the three months to June 2011, a rise of 83,000 from the previous quarter.

Unemployment rates for women also reached a record high, with a 21,000 increase over the three months to June leading to the highest number of unemployed women in 23 years.

Business groups and unions expressed concern over the figures and have called on the Government to rexamine its plans to encourage growth.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) claimed that the figures reinforce the need to help the private sector create jobs by reducing the burden of red tape on businesses.

BCC chief econonomist David Kern said: “The figures reveal a worrying rise in unemployment.

Fragile economy fuels demand for temporary workers

This is according to the latest JobsOutlook survey from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), which highlighted a reduction in the number of employers that said they are planning to increase their permanent workforce in the next three months – down from 74% to 67%.

When asked about their longer-term plans, 49% of employers said that they expect to expand their permanent workforce over the next 12 months, compared with 66% last month.

By contrast, there has been an increase in the number of employers looking to increase their use of agency staff. Some 83% of employers predict their use of temporary staff to either increase or remain the same, an increase from 80% last month. <

‘Borat’ nickname for Polish employee was race discrimination

In July 2007, Mr Ruda, who is Polish, began work as a quality assurance engineer for Tei, an engineering company in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. In 2010, he brought a number of claims against the company, including race and sexual orientation discrimination.

Mr Ruda, a welder, claimed that, in the autumn of 2007, he had been given the nickname “Borat”, the name of the film and television character created by by Sacha Baron Cohen. The allegation was one of more than a dozen, the vast majority of which the tribunal rejected, describing Mr Ruda’s evidence as “less than persuasive and less than honest”.

However, the tribunal held that Mr Ruda had been harassed on the grounds of race by a colleague calling him “Borat” and that the use of the nickname created a degrading and humiliating working environment for him.
