One of America’s top bloggers and columnists on aviation has said that landing pilot jobs is getting harder and harder, despite the surge in demand for commercial pilots.
Kent Wien, a pilot of more than 30-years experience who writes AOL Travel’s Cockpit Chronicles blog, said that the new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for a 1,500 hour minimum flight time for new airline pilots is only being compounded by a dwindling number of pilots coming straight out of military work.
He added that the military was training increasing numbers of drone pilots, rather than F-16 fighter pilots, and the drone work is not recognized by commercial airlines as part oft of the 1,500 hour flying time.
Wein said that there were a number of optimistic spots on the horizon for people seeking pilot jobs, however. A surge in recruitment is expected next year, when pilots will start hitting the mandatory retirement age again after the number was raised from 60 to 65 back in 2007. He said that airlines will be forced to address their training and recruitment processes
He added that the new flight time and duty regulations would also see airlines keen to take on new recruits, with American Airlines claiming that they would need around 2,300 new pilots.
