Another blow for Arup as senior partner David Glover follows sports team in move to engineer
Aecom has poached one of Arup’s most senior partners, David Glover, just weeks after prising a team of sports specialists away from the firm.
Glover – who had been at the engineer for 22 years – will become deputy chief executive of Aecom’s building engineering business, which employs 4,000 people worldwide.
The move comes just three weeks after Aecom tempted four sports architects to jump ship from ArupSport, the division that worked on the Singapore Sports Hub. Hig
US aviation jobs across all disciplines, as well as thousands of construction jobs, will be at risk if the new Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) budget is not approved, the Obama administration has warned.
The bleak outlook was voiced this week with the hope of encouraging the Senate to come to a decisive and positive resolution on the $2.5 billion airport projects bill. If not passed, airport development projects in all 50 states would grind to a halt, and up to 4,000 FAA employees would have to be furloughed until an agreement can be reached.
Transportation secretary, Ray LaHood told a press conference that the effects of a stalemate would be close to disastrous. Read more…
I often ask successful professionals about their first jobs. Rarely does anyone tell me they loved, or really enjoyed those initial gigs.
Why? Because it’s rare to walk out of school and into the perfect job, one that’s fun and fullfilling. That’s just how the real world works. Believe it or not, you may actually hate that first job and spend more time learning and paying dues than sitting back in a rocking chair saying, “wow, my job is so great.”
That may be a bit of a disappointment to many younger workers. One study
I received an email recently asking for articles on recruiting best practices within immature companies. It’s a solid request but broad in scope because, depending on who you ask, “recruiting best practices” will vary with the number of people you ask. What I feel are best practices may differ significantly from someone else’s. I say this because it was the lack of quality recruiting practices I experienced that ultimately drove me out of recruiting and into what I do now. There is a school of thought that small companies need to approach recruiting best practices differently from large companies.
At a high level I disagree. I belie

The Metro Council’s Community Services Agency (CSA) Building Futures pre-apprenticeship training program has won a $900,000 grant as part of the Jobs for the Future consortium. Says said CSA Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy:
This is a big deal. We will get nearly $1 million over three years in partnership with the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region and Wider Opportunities for Women to keep our pre-apprenticeship training program going.

Take away coffee addicts can be worse for office productivity than smokers. The Sunday Mail reports that with some workers taking six breaks a day to get their hit of caffeine and sunshine, businesses are losing several hours of paid work every day.
“You would be looking at 1-2 cups of coffee a day – once you’re getting past that you’re starting to develop a level of commitment to it.”
But according to workplace and teamwork expert Dr Nicole Gillespie, there’s nothing to fear for those of us who only have a few cups a day.
“There’s evidence to support the view that having regular breaks can enhance productivity.”
If you have empty fields in your LinkedIn profile, you might want to take some time to complete them. Professional networking site LinkedIn is rolling out a plug-in that lets jobseekers use their LinkedIn profile information to apply for positions right from an employer’s Website with the click of a button.
The new feature, called “Apply with LinkedIn,” requires only a few steps to apply for jobs, and the information you submit can easily be personalized. When you click the “Apply with LinkedIn” button on a company’s website, a new screen pops up that lets you edit any of the fields in your profile.
